Riders compete on a short track that goes around in a single lap. These tracks are full of many different features to test a rider's skill. You might see banked corners called berms that help riders turn without braking. There are also many types of jumps like rollers or big doubles. A double is two hills placed close together for a jump. Some jumps are called tabletops because they are flat on top. These are great for beginners who are still learning to land.

To start a race, riders use a special start gate. This gate is usually at the top of a large hill. The hill is very important because it gives the riders speed. Larger hills help riders go even faster for the rest of the race. Some jumps are called step-ups because you land higher than you started. Other jumps are step-downs where you land at a lower spot. Riders also face rhythm sections made of small hills called rollers. These challenge riders to keep their speed over the bumps.

This sport has a very interesting history. It began to look like the modern sport in Southern California. A man named Ron Mackler helped organize local races in 1969. He worked at a park in West Los Angeles. The very first race took place on July 10, 1969. By 1973, races lasted for ten weeks at a time. In the 1990s, the sport grew into two main groups. One group is racing, which is very fast and competitive. The other is freestyle, which focuses on tricks and creativity.

There are two main sizes for racing bikes. The first type has 20-inch wheels and is called a "Class" bike. The second type is called a "Cruiser" bike. Cruiser bikes have larger wheels, often 24 inches.
