It is a sport where riders sprint for victory on a track. In Japan, the word Keirin can mean the original local version. In other parts of the world, it refers to a modified international version. This sport is very popular with fans who enjoy watching the skill of the riders. It even involves betting on which cyclists will finish first.

Many people gather at velodromes to watch these intense races happen.

A race follows a very specific set of steps.

First, riders parade to their starting blocks and bow to the track. At the sound of a gun, they start the race. They must stay behind a pacer for three laps. This pacer might use a motorcycle, an electric bike, or even a tandem bike. The pacer starts at a slow speed and gradually goes faster.

The pacer leaves the track before the race is actually over. Then, the cyclists sprint as hard as they can toward the finish line.

The history of Keirin begins in Japan around the year 1948. It was originally created for gambling purposes. Over time, it grew into a major international sport. The men's event joined the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. The women's event was added later for the London Olympics in 2012.

Great athletes like Jason Kenny and Shanne Braspennincx have won gold medals. The sport has many famous champions from many different nations.

Becoming a professional rider in Japan is a very hard job.

Aspiring riders must try to enter the Japan Keirin School. Only about 10 percent of people who apply are accepted. Once they are in, they must train for 15 hours every day. Riders also have different ranks to show their skill level. You can tell a rider's rank by the colors on their shorts. For example, the top nine SS class riders wear red shorts. They compete in the Keirin Grand Prix at the end of December.

Keirin connects to the wider world of professional cycling.

The Union Cycliste Internationale, or UCI, manages the world championships. These championships have included men since 1980 and women since 2002. Different countries send their best riders to compete against each other. It is a sport of speed, discipline, and great teamwork. Whether in Japan or at the Olympics, Keirin shows how much strength a cyclist can have.
