Greyhound racing is an organized sport where fast dogs compete on tracks.

People watch these races for excitement and fun. Many fans also enjoy betting on which dog will win. This is often done through bookmakers or a system called a totalisator. In some places, the sport is a large commercial industry. In other areas, it is done at an amateur level. Many people find the speed of the dogs very amazing to watch.

To make the race happen, the dogs chase a special object. This object is called a mechanical hare or an artificial lure. It is usually a shape like a windsock that moves along a rail.

The lure travels ahead of the dogs to keep them running fast. This method replaced the older way of racing called coursing. In coursing, dogs would chase real animals like jack rabbits. The mechanical lure allows the dogs to run in a safe, controlled way. It helps the dogs stay focused on the race path.

Modern racing began with new inventions in the early 1900s. An American named Owen Patrick Smith invented the mechanical hare in 1912. He wanted to make racing more like horse racing. He also wanted to stop the killing of jack rabbits. Smith opened the first professional track in Emeryville, California. This arena was later replaced by a new park in 1920. In Britain, the sport grew very quickly after 1926. A man named Charles Munn brought the oval tracks to the UK. He worked with a judge named Major Leslie Lyne Dixson.

History shows that the sport has spread to many different lands. Australia has the world's largest commercial greyhound racing industry. In China, racing happened at the Canidrome in Macau for many years. In India, races were held in places like Kolkata during the 1930s. Some countries have even passed laws to stop the sport entirely. Argentina ended its racing in November 2016 with a new law. New Zealand also announced a ban in December 2024. This ban will help move thousands of dogs to new homes. These changes happen because people want to ensure dogs are safe.

Today, many people talk about how to care for the dogs. Animal welfare groups worry about injuries and how dogs are bred. They also care about what happens to dogs when they stop racing. Most dogs finish their racing careers between four and six years old. Some dogs are kept for breeding, but many are rehomed. To keep track of them, some dogs have ear tattoos.

They might also have microchips inside them. These tools help people identify each dog as they move to new lives. The sport continues to change as rules and laws evolve.
