This means they hunt using their eyes and great speed. They have a very distinct look with a tall and muscular build. Their bodies have an S-shaped outline that is typical for sighthounds.

They have long legs and a deep chest to help them run. Most Greyhounds have very short fur that is easy to care for. There are about 30 different colors recognized for this breed. These include white, black, red, fawn, brindle, and even blue.

This dog is built to be an elite athlete. Their speed comes from a special way of running called a double suspension rotary gallop.

During this gallop, all four feet leave the ground twice in every stride. They have a very flexible spine to help this movement. Their large hearts and high number of red blood cells help too. These cells carry oxygen to their muscles very quickly. Their muscles also have a high amount of fast-twitch fibers. This allows them to reach very high sprinting speeds.

Greyhounds are an ancient breed with a very long history.

Drawings from Turkey show similar dogs as far back as 6000 BC. Other findings in Iran date to 4200 BC. In Syria, bones of similar dogs are about 4,000 years old. Some people believe they came from the Celts in Europe. This is based on old writings about a dog called the vertragus. They have been shown in famous art for many centuries.

They have more red blood cells than most other dogs. However, they have fewer platelets, which can cause bleeding issues. This is sometimes called greyhound fibrinolytic syndrome. They are also very sensitive to certain insect sprays. Because they have little body fat, they feel temperature easily. They should live inside to stay safe from heat and cold. A 2024 study found their average life is 11.5 years.

They are often friendly to strangers and other dogs. Some people call them "Velcro dogs" because they follow owners everywhere. They are very sociable and love human contact. While they are usually calm, they might chase small animals. They are excellent pets for families with polite children. Many retired racing dogs now live as happy house pets.
