These dogs are famous for their amazing sense of smell. They can find human scents from very far away. They can even follow a scent that is many days old. Because they are so good at this, police use them all over the world. They help find missing people, lost pets, or escaped prisoners. This makes them very important helpers in many different places.

Tracking works by using the dog's keen nose to follow a path.

A Bloodhound has a strong instinct to keep following a smell. In the past, they were used as "limers." This means they were handled on a leash to find animals like deer or boar. They would find the scent before the rest of the hunting pack arrived. They were prized because they could track the cold scent of an animal. This helped hunters find their way through the woods.

History tells us these dogs have very old roots.

Legend says they were first bred around the year 1000. Monks at the Saint-Hubert Monastery in Belgium may have started the breed. Because of this, they are sometimes called Chien de Saint-Hubert. For a long time, monks sent pairs of black hounds as gifts to the King of France. Over many centuries, the original St. Hubert strain changed or died out. The modern Bloodhound we know today grew from those early ancestors.

There are many interesting facts about how a Bloodhound looks and lives.

These dogs are quite large and weigh between 36 and 72 kg. They have very thick bones and a hard coat of fur. Their colors are usually black, red, or liver, which is a dark brown. A 2024 study in the UK found they live about 9.3 years on average. Owners must be careful because they can get a stomach problem called bloat. This is a serious illness and a common cause of death for the breed.
