A setter is a special type of gundog. These dogs help people find game like quail, pheasant, or grouse.

They are known for being fast and stylish. There are four main breeds in this group. These are the English, Gordon, Irish, and Irish Red and White Setters. Each breed has small differences in their bones and heads. Some setters are larger if they come from show lines. Other setters are smaller if they come from working lines. They are friendly, happy dogs that need daily exercise.

Setters have a very smart way of working. They search for birds by using their sense of smell. The scent of a bird moves through the air. Because of this, a setter carries its head high. It does not follow scents on the ground. When the dog finds a bird, it does not chase it. Instead, the dog becomes very still. It stays in a crouch or a "set" position. This is how the dog shows where the bird is.

Once the dog freezes, the birds are flushed out. In the past, people used nets to catch the birds.

These dogs have a long and interesting history. They likely started from spaniel dogs in Spain. Later, they were moved to France and England. People there developed them into the breeds we know today. Some believe these breeds go back to the 15th century in the UK. In 1576, a doctor named Johannes Caius wrote about a new kind of dog. He said they came from France and had white and black colors. Some think he was describing the blue belton color in English setters.

Dog shows helped make these breeds official. The first official show in the UK was in June 1859. It was held in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Only setters and pointers could enter that show. There were 36 setters and 23 pointers in the competition. A black and tan setter named Dandy won the first prize. The prize was a double-barrelled gun worth 15 to 20 pounds. In 1873, The Kennel Club was founded to help classify breeds.

Earlier, in 1806, a black setter named Peg sold for 41 guineas.

Setters can win many big awards in competitions. In the UK, they can earn the title of Dual Champion. This is the highest award for a setter. It means the dog is a champion in both shows and field trials. An English Setter was the first gundog to ever reach this title. Irish Setters have won Best in Show at Crufts seven times. They won in 1981, 1993, 1995, and 1999.
