Whist is a classic English card game built on skill and focus. The name comes from an old word meaning quiet or silent. This name suggests that players must stay very attentive to the game. It is a trick-taking game where players try to win rounds called tricks. People have loved this game for hundreds of years because it is both simple and strategic.

You can play it for fun or in serious competitions. Even today, people can play it online using the same rules from long ago.

Four players participate in a game of Whist. They form two teams by sitting across from their partners. A standard pack of 52 cards is used for play. The dealer gives 13 cards to each player, one at a time. The very last card dealt is turned face up to set the trump suit. Trumps are special cards that can beat any other suit in a trick.

During play, you must follow the suit that was led if you can. If you cannot, you may play a trump card to try and win.

The history of Whist is very long and interesting. It likely grew from older games like Triumph or Trionf. In 1674, a game called Ruff and Honours was very popular in England. Whist became a more stable version of that game. Around 1728, gentlemen played it using scientific principles at the Crown Coffee House in London.

A man named Edmond Hoyle helped make the game famous. He published a book of rules in 1742 that people used for a century.

Many famous books have explained how to play Whist well. In 1862, Henry Jones wrote a book called The Principles of Whist. He wrote using the name "Cavendish" to keep his identity private. His book became the standard guide for players to study. By the late 1800s, the game had very strict rules and manners.

Eventually, a newer game called Bridge began to replace Whist in many clubs. However, Whist stayed popular at social events and charity drives.

Whist is important because it helped create many other card games. It is part of a large family of games called the triumph group. This family includes games like Bid Whist, which is popular in the United States. It also includes Dutch Whist and the Russian game known as Vint. Some versions, like Solo Whist, are played in Britain. Even games like Spades or Tarneeb share ideas with the original Whist.
