Edmond Hoyle was a famous English writer. He was known for writing about card games.

People often use his name to talk about rules. They use the phrase "according to Hoyle." This means doing something strictly by the rules. It shows that someone is a true authority. His books helped people understand how to play games fairly. This made him a very important figure in gaming history.

In 1741, Hoyle began teaching high society members how to play whist. He first sold them his handwritten notes. Later, he published a real book in 1742. It was called "A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist." This book was quite expensive at one guinea.

The book sold out very quickly. Instead of printing more, Hoyle sold the rights to Francis Cogan. Cogan paid him 100 guineas for the work. This was a huge amount of money back then.

Some people tried to steal Hoyle's ideas. Two printers made fake books without his name. They used the fake names Webster and Webb.

To help, Cogan had Hoyle sign the real books. This signature helped people find the genuine copies. These pirates made money, but it was hard for Cogan. He had to lower his prices to match them. Later, a man named Thomas Osborne published Hoyle's books with more success.

Hoyle wrote about many different things. He wrote about backgammon in 1743. He also wrote about piquet, chess, and quadrille.

He even wrote a book about math and chance in 1754. His ideas spread to many other countries. People translated his work into Portuguese in 1753. They also translated it into German, French, and Italian. It even reached Russia and the Netherlands. His books were very popular all over Europe.

Many people still remember Edmond Hoyle today. He died in London in 1769 at age 97. Even though he lived long ago, he is in the Poker Hall of Fame. He was added there in 1979. This is interesting because poker was not invented yet. In America, people sometimes call a rule book a "Hoyle." This is like calling a guide a "Baedeker." His name remains a symbol of playing games the right way.
