Cotton was a very skilled fisherman on the River Dove. He wrote twelve chapters for a book called The Compleat Angler. These chapters taught people how to fish for trout or grayling. He used a heavy rod made of solid wood. His fishing lines were thin and made of horse-hair. He even showed how to make tiny flies for the fish. He used soft hair from animals like camels and dogs.
