He lived from 1672 to 1769. Hoyle is best known for his books about card games. He wrote a famous book about a game called whist.

Hoyle taught wealthy people how to play whist. He sold his notes to them. Later, he made a real book about the game. It was very popular. Some people even tried to steal his work. They printed fake books without his name. To stop this, the real books had his own signature. This helped people know which books were real.

Hoyle wrote about many other games too. He wrote about chess and backgammon.

Today, people still use his name. They say "according to Hoyle." This means doing something by the rules. It means doing something the right way. Even though he died long ago, he is in the Poker Hall of Fame. He helped make game rules a big part of our world.
