He studied how stars make new things. This way of making elements is called nucleosynthesis. Hoyle showed that stars make heavy things like iron. He also found a way that stars make carbon. Carbon is very important for life. He even predicted a special way carbon is made. He said it needs a specific type of energy. Later, scientists proved he was right.

During a war, Hoyle worked on radar. Radar helps find planes in the sky. He also wrote many science fiction stories.

Hoyle had some ideas that others did not like. He did not believe in the Big Bang. The Big Bang is the idea that the universe had a beginning. Instead, he liked a steady-state model. This idea says the universe stays the same. He also thought life might come from space. This idea is called panspermia.

Hoyle worked at Cambridge University for a long time. He led a big group of space experts there.
