She studied how stars work. In the 1950s, she helped find a big secret. She helped prove that stars make chemical elements. These are the tiny parts that make up everything. This idea is called stellar nucleosynthesis. She wrote a very important paper about this work.

Later, she found a very far object in space. It was a quasar, which is a bright spot far away. It was the most distant thing known at that time. She also helped make a tool for the Hubble Space Telescope. This tool is called a spectrograph. It helps scientists study light from space.

Margaret also fought for fairness. In her time, some places did not let women work. She worked to stop this unfair treatment. She became the first female president of the American Astronomical Society. She led many big groups in science. She lived to be 100 years old. She wrote over 370 papers about her finds.
