She studied what stars are made of. In 1925, she made a big discovery. She found that stars are mostly hydrogen and helium. Hydrogen is a gas that is very common. It is about a million times more common in stars than on Earth.

At first, other scientists did not believe her. They thought stars were made of the same things as Earth. One expert even said her work was wrong. But he later found out she was right. Her math was correct all along.

Cecilia faced many hard rules because she was a woman. At first, she could not get a degree from Cambridge. Later, Harvard would not give her a PhD. She earned her degree from Radcliffe College instead.
