Edwin Salpeter was a man who studied the stars. He was born in Austria in 1924. He later lived in Australia and America. He spent much of his career at Cornell University.

Edwin made many big discoveries in space. He found a way that stars make carbon. This happens through the triple-alpha process. This is a set of steps where stars burn helium to make carbon. He also studied how stars are born. He found that there are fewer heavy stars than light stars.

Edwin looked at very bright objects called quasars. He and another scientist found out why they are so bright. They said bright discs of matter around black holes make this power. He also studied how molecules form. He found they form on the surfaces of tiny dust particles in space.

Edwin won many awards for his work. He received the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society. He also won the Crafoord Prize. Edwin died in 2008. His work helps us understand the universe today.
