Jack Steinberger was a famous physicist. He studied the tiny parts of matter. These parts are called subatomic particles.

Jack was born in Germany in 1921. His family moved to the United States when he was 13. He studied chemistry at the University of Chicago. Later, he became a teacher and a researcher. He worked at many places. These included Columbia University and a lab called CERN.

Jack did very important work with neutrinos. A neutrino is a tiny particle. It is hard to see. Jack and two other men found a new kind of neutrino. They called it the muon neutrino. This showed that there is more than one type of neutrino. This discovery was a big deal for science.

For this work, Jack won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1988. He also won the National Medal of Science. Jack loved the outdoors too. He liked to sail boats and climb mountains. He stayed active and visited his home in Germany even when he was old.
