He studied tiny particles called neutrinos. These particles are very small. They come from the sun.

Koshiba built large tools to find them. He used tools named Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande. These tools helped solve a big mystery. Scientists saw fewer neutrinos than they expected. This was called the solar neutrino problem.

Koshiba found out why this happened. He learned that neutrinos change types while they fly. This is called neutrino oscillation. This discovery helped us understand how the sun makes power.

In 2002, Koshiba won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a very big award for scientists. He shared it with Raymond Davis Jr. He also won the Wolf Prize.
