Victor Hess was a scientist who studied physics. He was born in 1883. For a long time, scientists were puzzled by radiation. Radiation is a type of energy. Most people thought this energy came from the Earth. They thought it would get weaker as you went higher.

Victor wanted to solve this mystery. He used tools called electroscopes to measure the radiation. He took these tools up in a balloon. He flew very high in the sky. He did this during the day and at night. These flights were quite risky for him.

Victor found something amazing. The radiation did drop at first. But after a certain height, it went up. At 5,000 meters, the radiation was much higher. It was about twice as high as at sea level. This showed the energy came from outer space.

Another scientist named Robert Millikan named these cosmic rays. These are rays that come from space. Victor Hess won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936. He shared the prize with Carl David Anderson. Their work helped us learn about tiny particles.
