Arno Penzias was a scientist who studied space.

He was a radio astronomer. This means he used radio waves to study the stars.

In 1964, Arno worked at Bell Labs in New Jersey. He and a friend named Robert Wilson used a large tool. This tool was a big horn antenna.

They heard a strange noise on their machine. They thought the noise came from Earth. They even cleaned bird droppings out of the antenna. But the noise did not go away.

They found out the noise was from space. This noise is called cosmic microwave background radiation. It is a leftover signal from the Big Bang. The Big Bang was the start of our universe. This discovery was very important. It proved many ideas about how the world began. Arno and Robert won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978. This is a very big prize for scientists. Arno lived a long life. He died in 2024 at age 90.
