He was born in 1936 in Texas. He studied physics at Rice University. Later, he earned a PhD at Caltech.

Wilson worked at Bell Labs in New Jersey. He used a large tool called the Holmdel Horn Antenna. He and Arno Penzias heard a strange noise. They could not explain it at first. They even cleaned pigeon droppings off the tool. But the noise stayed. This noise was cosmic microwave background radiation. This is a type of energy from space. It helped prove the Big Bang theory.

In 1970, Wilson led a team of scientists. They found carbon monoxide in the Orion Nebula. This is a bright cloud in space. This work helped start new ways to study space. For his big discovery, Wilson won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize in 1978.
