George Smoot was a scientist who studied the stars. He was an astrophysicist. This means he studied how space and light work.

He wanted to know how the universe began.

Smoot looked for a special kind of heat in space. Scientists call this cosmic microwave background radiation. It is a faint glow left over from the start of the universe. Smoot used a satellite named COBE to find it.

COBE was a tool sent into space. It was very sensitive. It found tiny changes in the heat of the sky. These changes are called anisotropies. These tiny ripples showed how the first parts of the universe formed. This work helped prove the Big Bang theory.

For this big discovery, Smoot won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006. He shared the prize with John Mather. Smoot also gave a lot of money to help science. He gave $500,000 to a physics center. He also gave money to a charity. He died in Paris in 2025 at age 80.
