He is a professor at UC Berkeley. He also leads a big science team. This team is the Supernova Cosmology Project.

His team looked at a special kind of star explosion. These are called Type Ia supernovae. These explosions happen when a small star gets too much mass. The star then blows up. These explosions are very useful to scientists. They always shine with the same brightness. Because they are steady, they act like a "standard candle." This means they help us measure how far away they are.

By looking at these stars, Perlmutter found something big. He saw that the universe is growing. Most importantly, it is growing faster and faster. This is called accelerating expansion.

This discovery was very important. It helped him win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. He shared this prize with two other scientists. He also won the 2015 Breakthrough Prize. He still works to learn more about our universe.
