He was born in Montana. Later, his family moved to Alaska. He once wanted to study weather. However, he chose to study stars instead. He studied at the University of Arizona. Then, he went to Harvard University.

Schmidt led a team of scientists. They studied supernovae. These are very bright, exploding stars. By looking at these stars, the team found a secret. They thought the universe was slowing down. But the stars showed it was actually speeding up. The expansion of the universe is accelerating. This means the universe is growing faster and faster.

This work was a big deal. Schmidt won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. He shared this prize with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess.

Schmidt also helps people. He wants more kids to learn science. He gave money to help teachers. He also visits schools to talk to children. He wants everyone to know why science matters.
