Arthur B. McDonald

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Arthur B. McDonald is a scientist from Canada.

He studies the stars and tiny particles. He is an astrophysicist. This means he studies how space and matter work together.

For a long time, scientists looked for tiny bits called neutrinos. These bits come from the sun. Scientists thought some neutrinos were missing. They found out the bits were just changing shape. This change is called oscillation. Because they change, these bits must have mass. Mass is how much matter is in something.

To prove this, Arthur led a big team. They built the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. It is also called SNO. They put a huge tank deep underground in a mine. The tank held 1,000 tonnes of heavy water. This helped them see the changing bits.

For this discovery, Arthur won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015. He also won the Breakthrough Prize in 2016. In 2020, he helped make tools for doctors. He led a team to make medical ventilators. These machines help people breathe during sickness.
