Jim Peebles is a scientist who studies the stars. He is a cosmologist. This is a person who studies how the universe began. He was born in Canada in 1935. He later moved to the United States. He worked at Princeton University for his whole career.

Peebles looks for clues about the early universe. In 1965, he helped explain a special light in space. This light is called cosmic microwave background radiation. It is a leftover glow from the start of everything. This work helped people believe in the Big Bang model. This is the idea that the universe started with a big event.

He also studied dark matter. This is a type of matter that we cannot see. He also studied how galaxies form. Because of his big ideas, he won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2019. This is a very famous award for science. Peebles still helps us understand how the sky works today.
