Michel Mayor

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Michel Mayor is a scientist from Switzerland. He studies the stars and space.

In 1995, Mayor and Didier Queloz made a big discovery. They found an exoplanet. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star far away. This planet orbits a star like our Sun. We call this star 51 Pegasi. This was the first time anyone found such a planet. It was a very important moment for science.

To find these worlds, Mayor built special tools. He used a spectrograph. A spectrograph is a tool that studies light. It helps him see how stars move. By watching these movements, he can find planets.

Mayor has won many awards. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2019. He also found Gliese 581c. This is a planet in a star's habitable zone. A habitable zone is a place where life might exist. Some planets are very far away. Mayor says humans cannot travel to them yet. It would take millions of days to get there. His work helps us look for life in the sky.
