Albert Fert

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Albert Fert is a physicist from France. He studies how tiny parts of matter work. In 1988, he made a big discovery. He found giant magnetoresistance, or GMR. This is a way to use magnetism in electronics. He found this at the same time as Peter Grünberg. This discovery helped make hard disks much better. Now, hard disks can hold a lot of data. This is called high density.

His work helped start a new field called spintronics. This field uses the spin of electrons. Spin is a type of magnetism that electrons have. Spintronics helps make tools like MRAM. MRAM is a type of memory for computers and phones.

Albert Fert has won many awards. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2007. He also won the Wolf Prize in 2006. He won the Japan Prize in 2007. He is a professor at Paris-Saclay University. He still studies new things today. He looks at tiny magnetic shapes called skyrmions. He also studies how to change electric flow into spin flow.
