James Cronin was a famous American scientist. He was a particle physicist. This means he studied the tiniest parts of our world. He was born in Chicago in 1931.

Cronin worked with a researcher named Val Fitch. Together, they studied tiny particles called kaons. They found something very surprising. They saw that these particles do not always act the same way if you run time backward. This discovery is called CP violation. It showed that the laws of nature are not always the same in reverse. For this big discovery, they won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1980.

Later, Cronin studied cosmic rays. These are rays that come from space. He also helped start the Pierre Auger Observatory. This project helps us learn about high-energy rays from the stars. James Cronin was also a teacher at the University of Chicago. He won many awards for his hard work. He died in 2016 at the age of 84.
