He was born in 1936 in Nebraska.

Barish is a leader in studying gravitational waves. These are tiny ripples in space. They happen when big things like black holes crash into each other. Barish helped lead a big project called LIGO. This project built tools to find those ripples. In 2015, the team found these waves for the first time. This proved an idea from Albert Einstein. Because of this work, Barish won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017. This is a very high honor for scientists.

Before LIGO, Barish studied very tiny things. He looked at particles called neutrinos. He also looked at quarks, which are tiny parts inside matter. He worked at many big schools. He spent much of his time at Caltech. In 2023, he won the National Medal of Science. This award shows how much he helped our world learn about space.
