David Gross is a famous scientist. He is a theoretical physicist. This means he uses math to study how the world works. He studies the tiny parts of atoms.

In 1973, Gross made a big discovery. He found something called asymptotic freedom. This is a special way that tiny particles act. When these particles are very close, the force between them is weak. They can move around almost freely. But if they try to move apart, the force gets much stronger. This is why the center of an atom stays together. This discovery helped make a theory called quantum chromodynamics. This theory explains the strong nuclear force.

Gross shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004. He won it with Frank Wilczek and David Politzer. He also studies string theory. This is a way to look at the smallest parts of our world. Gross teaches at a school in California. He also helps the world. He signed a paper to help stop climate change. He wants to make sure science gets enough money to grow.
