Hugh David Politzer

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hugh David Politzer is a scientist. He studies how tiny parts of matter work. He was born in New York City in 1949. He went to the University of Michigan. Later, he earned his PhD from Harvard University.

Politzer found something very special. He studied quarks. Quarks are tiny parts of matter. He found a thing called asymptotic freedom. This means quarks act differently when they are close. When quarks are very close, the force between them gets weak. They act almost like free particles. This find helped science grow. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this in 2004. He shared this prize with David Gross and Frank Wilczek.

He also helped predict a particle called charmonium. This is a particle made of a charm quark and a charm antiquark. Today, he is a professor at Caltech. He also loves music. He plays the banjo. He even studies the physics of the banjo. He once sang in a band called Professor Politzer and the Rho Mesons.
