Burton Richter was a famous American physicist. He studied the tiniest parts of our world. He was born in New York City in 1931. Later, he studied at a school called MIT. He became a professor at Stanford University.

Richter helped build a big machine. This machine is a particle accelerator. It makes tiny pieces of matter move very fast. He used this machine to find a new particle. He called this particle psi. Another scientist named Samuel Ting found it too. He called it J. Together, they called it the J/psi meson. This was a very big discovery for science.

In 1976, Richter and Ting won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a very special award for scientists. Richter also won the Enrico Fermi Award. He even won the National Medal of Science. He was the director of a big lab called SLAC. He led this lab from 1984 to 1999. Richter died in 2018 at the age of 87.
