Martin Perl was a famous scientist. He studied the smallest parts of our world.

Perl was a chemical engineer and a physicist. He was born in New York City. He studied at many great schools. Later, he worked at a place called SLAC. This was a lab in California. He used a large machine to study tiny things. The machine was a ring called SPEAR. It smashed electrons and positrons together. This made a lot of power.

Through these tests, Perl found a new particle. We call this the tau lepton. A lepton is a tiny part of matter. The tau is like an electron. But it is much heavier. It is 3,477 times the mass of an electron.

Perl and his team saw strange events. They saw electrons and muons appear. But some energy was missing. This showed a new particle must be there. Perl won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995. This is a very big prize for science. He shared the prize with Frederick Reines. Perl helped us learn how the universe works.
