Martin Lewis Perl was a famous American scientist. He worked as a chemical engineer and a physicist. He was born in New York City on June 24, 1927. His parents were Jewish immigrants from the Polish area of Russia. His father, Oscar Perl, ran a printing and advertising company. Perl studied hard and graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1948. He later earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1955.

Perl spent much of his career looking for tiny particles. He moved to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1963. This lab was being built in California at that time. He used a special machine called SPEAR to do his work. SPEAR was a ring that collided electrons and positrons. These collisions happened at very high energy levels. The machine reached up to 8 GeV of energy. This high energy helped create new, tiny particles.

Between 1974 and 1977, Perl discovered the tau lepton. A lepton is a type of tiny particle. The tau is very similar to an electron. It has a negative charge and a spin. However, the tau is much heavier than an electron. It has 3,477 times the mass of an electron. Perl and his team saw strange events during their tests. They saw electrons and muons appear in their detectors. They noticed that energy and momentum were missing. This meant a new, invisible particle must have been there.

Perl won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995. He shared this great honor with Frederick Reines. Reines won for detecting the neutrino. Perl was honored for his work with lepton physics. The name tau comes from a Greek word. That word means "third." This is because the tau was the third charged lepton found. He also received the Golden Plate Award in 1996. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from Belgrade.

His work helps us understand how the universe is built. The particles he found are like the smallest building blocks. We already know about electrons and muons. The tau is a third member of that family. Learning about these tiny things helps scientists see the big picture. Perl also cared about helping science in the government. He signed a letter in 2008 to support science funding. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 87. His life showed how curiosity can lead to big discoveries.
