Frederick Reines was a famous American physicist.

He spent much of his life studying a tiny particle called the neutrino. This particle is so small that many people thought it was impossible to see. Reines was even a talented singer in a chorus. He grew up in a small town in New Jersey. His family moved to North Bergen, New Jersey, later on. He loved science and liked to build new things.

Finding the neutrino was a very hard job. Scientists thought the particle could pass right through the Earth without hitting anything. Reines and his friend, Clyde Cowan, wanted to prove them wrong. They used a special liquid called a scintillator to help them. When a neutrino hit a proton, it created a specific sign. This sign produced gamma rays, which are a type of light energy. They even added cadmium salt to make the signal stronger.

Reines studied hard to become a scientist. He went to the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. There, he earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1939. He also earned a degree in mathematical physics in 1941. Later, he went to New York University. He finished his Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., in 1944. He even worked at the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project.

In the 1950s, Reines and Cowan began their big experiment. They first tried using a nuclear bomb as a source. Later, they decided to use a large nuclear reactor instead. This was a better way to do many tests over time. They worked at the Hanford site and the Savannah River Site. On June 14, 1956, they finally detected the neutrinos. They sent a telegram to announce their great success.

Reines's work changed how we look at the universe. He was the first to find neutrinos made by cosmic rays in our atmosphere. In 1965, he found them deep in a gold mine in South Africa. He also helped start neutrino astronomy. This means using neutrinos to study space. In 1987, he detected neutrinos from a supernova, which is a bright exploding star.

For this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995.
