He spent his life exploring the tiny building blocks of our world. He was also a professor who taught others about science. Alvarez was known for being very productive in his research. He worked on many different kinds of problems. His work helped us understand both tiny particles and the giant Earth.

One of his biggest successes was a tool called a bubble chamber. This was a large tank filled with liquid hydrogen. When tiny particles moved through the liquid, they left trails behind.

Alvarez's team could take millions of photographs of these trails. They used computer systems to study the photos very carefully. This allowed them to find entire families of new particles. Because of this discovery, he won the Nobel Prize in 1968.

Alvarez's career began with many important studies in the 1930s. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1936.

After that, he went to work at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked with a famous scientist named Ernest Lawrence. During this time, he used a machine called a cyclotron. He used it to study things like the neutron and tritium. He even conducted experiments in Mexico City to study cosmic rays.

During World War II, Alvarez worked on many radar projects.

He helped create a system called Ground Controlled Approach, or GCA. This system uses radar to help pilots land planes safely. It works even when the weather is very bad. GCA was so helpful that it was used during the Berlin airlift. For his work on GCA, he won the Collier Trophy in 1945.

Alvarez also looked at the big history of our planet. He worked with his son, Walter Alvarez, on a famous idea. They believed a large asteroid hit the Earth long ago. This impact might have caused the dinosaurs to go extinct.
