He spent his career exploring the fundamental laws of the physical world. His work ranged from the study of subatomic particles to the history of our planet. In 1968, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discoveries in particle physics. Scientists described him as one of the most brilliant experimental physicists of the twentieth century. His diverse research helped advance many different scientific fields.

Alvarez's early research focused on the behavior of nuclei and particles. After receiving his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1936, he worked at the University of California, Berkeley.

He used a machine called a cyclotron to conduct many experiments. One major success involved observing K-electron capture in radioactive nuclei. This process had been predicted by beta decay theory but had never been seen before. He also used the cyclotron to produce tritium, a form of hydrogen. By studying the helium-3 component in gas wells, he proved that tritium was radioactive and measured its lifetime.

During World War II, Alvarez moved to the MIT Radiation Laboratory to work on radar technology.

He contributed to several important projects, including improvements to Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) radar beacons. These are now commonly called transponders. He also worked on a system named VIXEN to protect aircraft from enemy submarines. VIXEN used a specific signal strength to trick submarines into thinking a plane was moving away. This prevented them from submerging to escape detection. Alvarez also invented a linear dipole array antenna, which was the first microwave phased-array antenna.

One of his most lasting contributions to aviation was the Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) system.

GCA uses high-resolution radar to help ground operators guide pilots to a runway. This system provides verbal commands to the pilot during landing. It is especially useful during bad weather or low visibility. GCA played a major role in the post-war Berlin airlift. Because of this invention, Alvarez was awarded the Collier Trophy in 1945. The system remained in use by some countries as late as the 1980s.

Alvarez also participated in the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Working under Robert Oppenheimer, he focused on the design of explosive lenses. He also worked on developing exploding-bridgewire detonators. As a member of Project Alberta, he observed the Trinity nuclear test from a B-29 Superfortress. He later observed the bombing of Hiroshima from another B-29 named The Great Artiste. These experiences placed him at the center of major historical and scientific events of the era.

In his later years, Alvarez revolutionized particle physics with the liquid hydrogen bubble chamber.

This device allowed his team to take millions of photographs of particle interactions. By using complex computer systems to analyze these images, they discovered entire families of new particles. This work revealed many resonance states, which are short-lived states of particles. This massive achievement led directly to his Nobel Prize in 1968. His ability to combine hardware invention with data analysis changed how physicists studied the subatomic world.

Beyond physics, Alvarez applied his curiosity to geology and archaeology.
