Mark Oliphant was a famous Australian physicist who changed how we understand energy.

He was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1901. Oliphant spent his life studying the tiny building blocks of our world. His work helped explain how the sun shines. He also helped create tools used during big wars. His discoveries touched everything from tiny atoms to huge machines.

One of his biggest discoveries involved a process called nuclear fusion.

This happens when tiny parts of an atom join together. While working in England, Oliphant found special particles called helions and tritons. He saw that when these particles reacted, they released huge amounts of energy. This energy came from inside the nucleus, which is the center of an atom. He realized this was the same way stars get their power. This was a very important step in science.

Oliphant's journey to great discoveries began with his studies in Australia.

He graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1922. He worked hard and even took a job as a jeweler's apprentice. This job helped him pay for night classes at the university. In 1927, he won a special scholarship to study in England. He went to the Cavendish Laboratory to work with Ernest Rutherford. This was a major goal for him. He became a very successful researcher there.

During the Second World War, Oliphant worked on very important technology.

He led a team at the University of Birmingham to build radar. His group created the cavity magnetron, which made microwave radar possible. He also helped with the Manhattan Project in the United States. He worked with Ernest Lawrence in California to separate isotopes. This helped create parts for the Little Boy atomic bomb. His work helped change how wars were fought.

After the war, Oliphant returned home to Australia to lead new projects.

He helped start the Australian National University. There, he helped build the world's largest homopolar generator. This was a huge machine used to study electricity. Later, he served as the Governor of South Australia. He was the first person from South Australia to hold that job. Even in his old age, he helped start new political groups. He lived a long and busy life until 2000.
