Richard Feynman was a famous American theoretical physicist.

He was born on May 11, 1918, in New York City. His father taught him to ask many questions. This helped him challenge old ways of thinking. As a child, he loved to fix radios.

He even built a burglar alarm for his home. These early hobbies showed his talent for engineering. He grew up to be a very important scientist.

Feynman did amazing work with tiny subatomic particles. He created something called Feynman diagrams.

These are special drawings that show how particles behave. They turn very hard math into pictures. This makes the math much easier to see. He also worked on the path integral formulation. This is a way to look at quantum mechanics. He also studied how liquid helium acts when it is supercooled. His ideas helped people understand the smallest parts of our world.

His journey through school was quite impressive. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for college.

Later, he went to Princeton University for his PhD. He earned his degree in 1942. During his time at Princeton, he met many great scientists. He even gave a seminar where Albert Einstein was listening. This was a very big moment for a young student. He worked hard to master many different kinds of math.

Feynman reached many great milestones in his life. In 1965, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

He shared this prize with Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichirō Tomonaga. They won for their work in quantum electrodynamics, or QED. This is the study of how light and matter work together. He also worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He helped study ways to separate uranium at Los Alamos. In 1999, many scientists ranked him as the seventh-greatest physicist ever.

He was also a wonderful teacher and communicator.

He wrote many books to explain science to everyone. One famous set of books is called The Feynman Lectures on Physics. He also spoke about nanotechnology, which is science using tiny machines. He helped start the field of quantum computing, too. In the 1980s, he joined a panel to study the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
