George Smoot was a famous American scientist who studied the stars and the history of our universe. He was an astrophysicist and a cosmologist. This means he studied how space, light, and the very beginning of everything work.

His work helped people understand the Big Bang theory. This is the idea that the universe began a long time ago. Smoot spent much of his career at the University of California, Berkeley. He also worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory starting in 1970. His discoveries changed how we look at the deep history of space.

Smoot wanted to study a faint glow left over from the start of the universe. Scientists call this cosmic microwave background radiation, or CMB for short.

He worked to find tiny changes in the temperature of this glow. These small variations are called anisotropies. To do this, he helped lead a huge project for NASA. They built a satellite named the Cosmic Background Explorer, or COBE. This satellite was designed to be very sensitive to heat. It could see things that other tools might miss.

Finding these tiny ripples in the heat was a very big deal. The COBE satellite was launched on November 18, 1989. It cost about $160 million to build and launch. After working for more than two years, the team found what they needed. On April 23, 1992, they announced that they saw tiny temperature fluctuations.

These ripples showed how the first parts of the universe began to form. This discovery provided evidence for the birth of the universe itself.

For this amazing work, Smoot won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006. He shared this honor with another scientist named John C. Mather.

Smoot had won many other awards throughout his life too. He received the Einstein Medal in 2003 and the Gruber Prize in 2006. He was also a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. Smoot was born in Yukon, Florida, on February 20, 1945. He lived in Alaska and Ohio before he went to college. He earned his Ph.D. in particle physics in 1970.

Smoot's life was full of many different and interesting things. He once appeared on a TV show called The Big Bang Theory. He even won a million dollars on a game show.

He was a very kind person who liked to help others. In 2007, he gave $500,000 to help a physics center in Berkeley. He also gave money to the East Bay Community Foundation. Smoot passed away in Paris on September 18, 2025. He was 80 years old when he died from a heart attack.
