His work helps us see things that are very far away. By studying light, he can learn secrets about our universe. He is a leader in his field of science.

His team uses special tools to look at deep space. They build instruments for use on the ground and in space. These tools help them track how stars move. They looked at stars near the center of our Milky Way galaxy. They watched stars move around a spot called Sagittarius A*.

This showed them a huge, heavy object called a black hole. This object is so heavy it pulls stars toward it.

Genzel was born on March 24, 1952, in Germany. His father, Ludwig Genzel, was also a physics professor. Reinhard studied at the University of Freiburg and the University of Bonn. He earned his PhD in radioastronomy in 1978.

Later, he worked at Harvard in Massachusetts. He also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Now, he is a director at the Max Planck Institute.

In May 2018, Genzel's team saw something amazing. They watched a star named S2 move near the black hole. The star moved at 7,650 km/s. That is about 2.55% of the speed of light.

This fast motion helped test a theory called general relativity. This theory was made by Albert Einstein. The star's movement helped prove that the theory was right.

Because of his hard work, Genzel won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He received this prize in 2020. He shared it with Andrea Ghez and Roger Penrose.

He has won many other awards too. These include the Hubble Prize and the Shaw Prize. His life shows how much we can learn by looking up. He continues to help us understand the big, dark parts of space.
