Didier Queloz is a famous Swiss astronomer. He spends his life studying the stars and the worlds around them.

His work changed how we see the entire universe. He helped start what scientists call the exoplanet revolution. This means we now know there are many planets outside our own solar system. He wants to find out if life exists on these distant worlds. This is a huge and exciting job for any scientist.

In 1995, Queloz made a history-making discovery with Michel Mayor. They found a planet named 51 Pegasi b. This was the first exoplanet found orbiting a star like our Sun. They found it by watching for a tiny wobble in the star. This wobble is caused by the pull of the orbiting planet. They used a tool called a spectrograph to see this movement. This tool measures something called radial velocity. Radial velocity is the speed at which a star moves toward or away from us.

Queloz grew up and studied in Switzerland. He went to the University of Geneva to learn about physics and astronomy. He earned his PhD degree in 1995 from that same school. Michel Mayor was his teacher and advisor during his studies. Since then, he has worked at many great places. He is a professor at the University of Cambridge in the UK. He is also a professor of physics at ETH Zurich.

His career is full of amazing facts and big awards. In 2019, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with Michel Mayor and Jim Peebles. He also won the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2017. He has helped find hundreds of different planets. Some of these planets are called Hot Jupiters because they are huge and hot. He also found Gliese 436 b, which is a Neptune-sized planet.

Today, Queloz uses many tools to study the cosmos. He helps lead the CHEOPS space mission to measure planet sizes. He also works with the TRAPPIST-1 system to look for life. He wants to find the "abiogenesis zone." This is a place where the right chemistry might allow life to start. His work links physics and biology together. He hopes to understand how life begins on planets far away.
