Powell found a new way to study tiny particles. He used special photographic emulsions. These are thick liquids that can record tracks on film. He took these films to high places. He used balloons and went to the tops of mountains. This helped him see cosmic radiation. This is energy that comes from space.

His work led to a big discovery in 1947. He found the pion. A pion is a tiny particle. This discovery helped prove a theory about nuclear forces. For this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950.

Powell also cared about world peace. He worked with groups to help keep the world safe. He was a leader in the Pugwash Movement.

In 1969, Powell died in Italy while on holiday. A friend built a wooden bench for him there.
