Walton worked with a man named John Cockcroft. They built a special machine. This machine is a particle accelerator. It uses high power to move tiny bits called protons. These protons hit the center of an atom. This process is called transmutation. It means changing one atom into a new one.

Their work was a big success. They split the center of lithium atoms. This work won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951. This is a very grand award for science.

Walton spent much of his life teaching. He worked at Trinity College Dublin. He was a great teacher. He could make hard ideas easy to understand. He also cared about peace. He helped start a group to stop nuclear arms races. Walton died in 1995. He was 91 years old. Many places in Ireland have names to honor him.
