He was a physicist who looked at how tiny particles move. This work was very important for understanding how nature works. He wanted to see things that are too small for our eyes. His discoveries helped us learn about the building blocks of everything.

Powell found a clever way to see tiny particles. He used something called a photographic emulsion. This is a special liquid that can record tracks on film. It works a bit like how a camera captures a picture. When particles fly through the liquid, they leave a trail behind. Powell took these plates to very high places. He used balloons and went to the tops of mountains. This allowed him to study cosmic radiation from space.

His research led to a huge discovery in 1947. He found a tiny particle called a pion. This particle is also known as a pi-meson. This discovery proved a theory made by Hideki Yukawa in 1935. It showed how nuclear forces work inside atoms. For this great work, Powell won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950. He also worked with scientists like Giuseppe Occhialini and César Lattes.

Powell was born in Tonbridge, England, on December 5, 1903. He went to The Judd School and later studied at Cambridge. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 1927. Later, he became a professor at the University of Bristol. He was also a member of the Royal Society. In 1949, he received the Hughes Medal for his work. He won the Royal Medal in 1961 as well.

Besides science, Powell cared deeply about world peace. He was a leader in the Pugwash Movement. This group worked to keep the world safe. He even signed a paper to help draft a world constitution. In 1969, Powell died of a heart attack in Italy. A friend built a wooden bench for him there. The bench sits on a mountain path near Lake Como. It is a quiet place for people to rest.
