Spitzer was an expert in plasma physics. Plasma is a special state of matter. He used this to study how stars form. He was one of the first to know that stars are being made right now. He also led a lab at Princeton University. This lab studied how to use plasma for power.

Spitzer had many big ideas for space. In 1946, he thought of a new way to use telescopes. He said they could work in outer space. This idea helped lead to the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA even named a space telescope after him. It is called the Spitzer Space Telescope.

He was a brave climber, too. In 1965, he and Donald Morton climbed Mount Thor. This mountain is in Canada. He helped start a grant for climbers. This grant gives money to help people go on mountain trips. Spitzer won many awards for his work. He even won the National Medal of Science.
