Ewing led over 50 trips on the ocean. He studied how earthquakes move and how the Earth's core flows. He even worked on how the moon shakes.

He started a place called the Lamont Geological Observatory. Now it is called the Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory. He wrote more than 340 science papers. He won many big awards. One was the National Medal of Science. People even named a part of the moon after him. They called it Dorsa Ewing. A large research ship was also named the R/V Maurice Ewing to honor him.
