He is often called the "Pathfinder of the Seas." This is because he helped sailors find better ways to travel.

Maury worked for the United States Navy. He started as a midshipman, which is a student officer. Later, he led an office in Washington, D.C. This office was called the Depot of Charts and Instruments.

Maury looked at thousands of old ship logs. These logs were books where sailors wrote down what they saw. He studied the winds and the currents, which are moving paths of water. By using these notes, he made new maps. One famous map was the Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic.

These maps showed sailors how to use the ocean to move faster. This made long trips much shorter. Maury also wanted countries to work together. He helped start a large meeting in Brussels to study weather. Because of his work, many nations shared sea data. He also helped start the United States Naval Academy.
