He spent his life studying the sea. When he was fifteen, a bad map caused a shipwreck. This event taught him how important good maps are. He wanted to make sure sailors stayed safe.

Beaufort worked hard to make better charts. A chart is a map used for sea travel. He measured the depth of the water. He also measured shorelines. These facts helped him draw very accurate maps. By the time he retired, his maps covered every sea. He served as the Hydrographer of the Navy for 26 years. This is a job that leads the study of the ocean.

He also made the Beaufort scale. This is a way to measure wind force. It helps people describe how strong the wind is. He even made a Beaufort cipher. A cipher is a secret way of writing. He used it to write in his own journals. Many places now carry his name. There is a Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Ocean. His work helped many scientists learn about our world.
