John Tuzo Wilson was a famous scientist from Canada. He studied the Earth and how it moves. He helped explain a big idea called plate tectonics. This theory says the Earth's outer layer is broken into pieces. We call these pieces tectonic plates. These plates move slowly over a softer layer below.

Wilson found new ways to understand this movement. He spoke about hot spots. These are very hot areas deep under the ground. As a plate moves over a hot spot, volcanoes can form. This is how the Hawaiian Islands were made. He also found transform faults. These are cracks where two plates slide past each other.

He was a great teacher at the University of Toronto. He also led the Ontario Science Centre. Wilson loved to travel to many far places. He took many photos of rocks, plants, and people. He even visited the North and South Poles. Many things are named after him today. This includes two underwater volcanoes in Canada. His work helps us understand our changing world.
