Hawaii hotspot

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Deep under the Pacific Ocean, there is a special place. We call it a hotspot. It is a plume of hot rock rising from deep inside the Earth.

This plume sends hot liquid, called magma, up to the sea floor. The magma erupts as lava. This builds big volcanic mountains. Some mountains grow tall enough to become islands. This is how the Hawaiian Islands were made.

The ocean floor moves like a slow belt. This belt is called a tectonic plate. The Pacific Plate moves over the fixed hotspot. As the plate moves, it carries old volcanoes away. New volcanoes grow in their place. This creates a long chain of mountains.

Some scientists think the hotspot stays in one spot. Others think the hotspot can move too. This might explain a big bend in the mountain chain. The chain includes over 123 volcanoes. Four are still active today. The oldest ones have worn down. They sink below the waves.
